Quite simply because she was the best geologist -- male or female -- for the job. And the job was to find a lost valley with towers and domes and living people in it somewhere in the vast frozen Antarctic landscape. Howard claimed to have seen this valley through a blinding snowstorm. But he'd been suffering from frostbite and may have imagined the whole thing.
If what Howard had seen was imaginary, then why was someone trying to kill them all on the second expedition? It was amazing that they ever got to the valley. And when they did, what they saw was something more frightening than a lost civilization. (less)
