Overview

This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the original. This is the classic account of the events surrounding the Pilgrim Fathers, detailing the events that led to their initial departure to the Netherlands, the sailing in the Mayflower, the early years of settlement with all their hardships, the later migrations to form other colonies leading to their uniting in 1643.

The author, John Brown (1830-1922), was minister of the Bunyan Meeting in Bedford and his historical works are well known and often referenced. Here, the formative influences that founded a nation are sketched with great pathos and sympathy. Drawing on State papers and the accounts of those involved, Brown shows that concern for liberty to worship without the Romish ceremonies that were insisted upon in the English Church motivated the Pilgrim Church to abandon their homeland for the uncertainties of travel to the New World. Their missionary concern and success among the Indians in the early days of settlement is also covered.
