Reading music is sometimes viewed as a mysterious skill, practiced only by an elite of highly trained musicians. Yet nothing could be further from the truth. Sight-reading -the ability to interpret noted music-is simply a matter of learning the meaning of a small number of symbols.
To get down to the basics, every musical not has three characteristics: pitch, duration, and volume: pitch is shown by the position of the symbol on a series of horizontal lines: the symbol itself tells you how long the note should be played: and dynamic marks tell you how loud to play the note. That's really all there is to it. How hard does that sound?
