When 12-year old Sara Green is given a new homework assignment, to create and present a family tree, she's scared it will ruin her chance to make friends. Her family isn't like other families in Portland - Sara is adopted, and she has two moms. Her brother Charlie wants to present on their moms, but when Sara finds a futuristic smartphone with an app that can take her back in time, she hatches a different plan.
Sara and Charlie travel back to the day they were born, in the pre-smartphone era. Sara wants to discover who her biological parents are. Charlie wants her to accept that she doesn't need to know them.
