Overview
Miss Silver accepts a visit from Mr. Lewis Brading, a collector of jewelry. His famous collection is housed within a stronghold on the grounds of a country club, and no one has access to it but he and his secretary, James Moberly. Brading is concerned about security in the light of recent and unusual occurrences. Miss Silver offers him sound advice, but in arrogance he refuses it. A few weeks later he is found murdered amidst his jewels. Randal March, the Chief Constable of Ledstow, asks Miss Silver to investigate Brading’s death. Since she is in possession of a letter from the victim and some sensitive information about James Moberly’s past, she is glad to oblige March with the benefits of her usual discretion and good sense to solve this most perplexing puzzle.
