Father Point, a Jesuit missionary, lived among the Flathead, Coeur d'Alene, and Blackfeet from 1840 to 1847, and he recorded his experiences in a manuscript, Souvenirs des Montagnes Rocheuses, translated here and published with 285 of his paintings done in a primitive style. The text and illustrations afford one of the earliest and most complete records of the customs, habits, family life, religion, hunting and war ceremonies, dances and costumes of the natives of present-day Montana and Idaho.
